Knollmühle –
A success story

For centuries, a mill has been operated in the narrow Gusental. Over time this became one of the most important mills in the region. Since 1932, the mill has been owned by the Knoll family, which has been active in the milling industry for several generations.

Today, more than 80 items with consistently high quality are produced at Knollmühle, being highly appreciated by bakers and the food industry.

No wonder many customers have been loyal to the company for decades.

Due to the constant modernization and production expansions, Knollmühle is one of the most important mills in Austria today.

Our history

1400

Since the late Middle Ages, a mill has been known at this location.

1932

Josef Knoll sen. bought the Klammmühle at the exit of Gusental.

1964

Construction of the first concrete grain silo and preparations for an increase in production capacity from 10 to 25t / day.

1976

Takeover of the company by Josef Knoll jun. including a previous mill expansion.

1979 

Construction of a grain silo with rail connection in Lugnitz.

1984

Automation of the hydropower plant. More than 1/3 of the total energy demand is sustainably covered by our hydropower.

1985

Renewal of the roller mills; Performance increase to 40t / day.

1994

Construction of the flour silo with batch mixing and IT-supported traceability of all flour batches and recipes. Complete transition to a computer-based mill control.

2000 – 2003

The mill gets completely renewed; Production increased from 40 to 100t / day.

2013-2014

Significant expansion of bulk storage capacities and creation of new production areas.

2022 – 2024

Construction of a spatially separate new building at the St. Georgen / Gusen location.

The latest and largest expansion since the company was founded fulfills the following purposes: expansion of storage, filling and packaging capacities according to the highest hygienic standards, creation of new production options in the areas of product refinement (premixes as well as functional raw materials), fermentation (upcycling of milling by-products ) and convenience products for end consumers with a high organic content from the region.
